A jackfruit tree and need for privacy formed the basis of architect Vinu Daniel’s design philosophy when he was approached by a client to build a family home for eight near Ernakulam in Kerala. At first glance, you might think this property is a forest lodge tucked away in the hills. While the location is bang in the middle of an industrial pocket with the sound of men and machines, the home, owing to its inward-looking design, still exudes peace and affords privacy. “This gave form to the idea of a compound wall that revolves around the tree and twists upwards to join the ferro-cement shell roof of the house seamlessly,” he explains.
